Postdoc in Energy Harvesting in the Gut –Microelectronics and Transducers

The ‘Drug delivery and Sensor (IDUN)’ section at DTU Health Tech wishes to employ a postdoc for 2 years within the framework of our highly interdisciplinary activities supported by a Novo Nordisk Foundation Challenge grant named ‘EMGUT – Energy Materials for the Gut’. We are here specifically looking for a person who can initiate activities within microelectronics and potentially control sensors and actuators in the gut environment. This project will expose you to a highly multidisciplinary research field and environment and you will be able to be active all the way from microdevice development to animal testing.

Our section makes use of a toolbox consisting of among others, microdevices, various drug formulation technologies, micro&nano fabrication, electrospinning, coherent anti-stokes Raman scattering microscopy, 3D printing and in vitro and in vivo models. Currently, we are pursuing the vision of ‘swallowing your own doctor’. That is a device or solution that will be able to sample, sense and deliver in the gut – and for this, we need energy materials.

Responsibilities and qualifications

We seek a person who is in line with our IDUN values (www.idun.dtu.dk) and who is highly self-motivated and with a great flair for guiding students. You can see the greater picture of the section/department and align with the goals of the section. You enjoy the interaction with team members, students and collaborators, and create a positive working environment. You are motivated by both individual and team accomplishments.

You will be responsible for expanding our activities within microelectronic devices with wireless communication capabilities to control sensors and actuators. This will include knowledge and work in low-power miniature microcontrollers, Bluetooth/ZigBee/Z-Wave/RFID/etc., pH/Temperature/etc. sensing and ionic actuators. Therefore, it is essential that you have solid knowledge and interdisciplinary experience in: low-power device circuit design, harvested energy conditioning and transducer control.

Your primary tasks will be to

◦Explore possibilities for energy harvesting in the gut – with a focus on microelectronics

◦Low-power microelectronic devices design, programming, and evaluation

◦Explore and implement low-power wireless communication methods

◦Realise integration of sensors and actuators

◦Explore strategies for storing harvested energy

◦Test microelectronic devices in vitro and eventually in vivo

◦Teach and supervise BSc and MSc student projects, and be co-supervisor for PhD students

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

We offer

DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment. We strive for academic excellence in an environment characterized by collegial respect and academic freedom tempered by responsibility.

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is two years.
