Postdoctoral Research Fellow in HPV vaccination and screening

This position is located within a health-care facility. Therefore, this position requires successful verification of full vaccination against Covid-19 provided prior to the start date, as required by the provincial health mandate.

The School of Population and Public Health (SPPH) is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) for a 2-year term, with an initial appointment of one year. The Postdoctoral Fellow will work both at the Vaccine Evaluation Center, BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute, and with the Global Control of HPV Related Diseases research team at Women’s Health Research Institute. The projects will be centered around exploring reduced dosing for the HPV vaccine, other long-term evaluations of HPV vaccination and secondary prevention of HPV related diseases. The PDF will work under the supervision of Dr. Gina Ogilvie and Dr. Manish Sadarangani in a dry lab setting.

Housed within the Faculty of Medicine, the School of Population and Public Health (SPPH) is an innovative unit that encompasses many of the health-related groupings at UBC as a collaborative venture. The School is structured around four divisions: Occupational and Environmental Health; Health Services and Policy; Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Public Health Practice; and Health in Populations. The resulting mix of professions and disciplines is seen as a means of connecting individuals and learners to galvanize the relationship between health research, public health and health services and to enhance learning.

The primary activities of the Postdoctoral Research Fellow include:

- Evaluation of vaccine effectiveness of two- versus three-doses of HPV vaccine against HPV infections. Analysis will be performed by use of existing data from the QUEST study, which includes girls from all over Canada who have received two- or three-doses of the HPV vaccine.

- Evaluation of effectiveness of reduced dosing schedules (example: one dose) against cervical (precursor) lesions. Analyses will involve conducing a data-linkage study between the cervical cancer screening and vaccination registry and other registries

- Evaluation of effectiveness of reduced dosing schedules against genital warts. Data from STI clinics will be used to calculate the effectiveness of reduced dosing schedules against genital warts.

- Leading the team to develop other projects related to primary and secondary prevention of HPV related cancers, including: Systematic reviews, additional reduced dosing studies, and other HPV related cancers, such as anal cancer in women

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

- Completion of a PhD in a relevant discipline (epidemiology and/or biostatistics, public health, or a related quantitative discipline).

- Candidates with experience and training related to longitudinal data-analysis, natural history of HPV, (HPV) vaccines, HPV vaccine research. A background or knowledge in cervical cancer screening would be an asset.

- Experience in mentoring and supervising students and trainees and leading teams

- Possess a strong research background as demonstrated by past publications, accomplishments and references

Skills:

- Display strong ability to work independently, self-directed, yet also be able to work collaboratively with the team, to meet team goals

- Excellent leadership skills

- Excellent organizational and communication skills, including strong writing, research and interpersonal skills.

- Ability to manage several complex tasks and projects simultaneously

- Ability to work in R/and or SAS statistical software. Demonstrated experience with these packages necessary.

- Ability to train and mentor students and other trainees

- Ability to participate in all aspects of project management (protocol planning, grant writing, planning implementation and evaluation)

Errors made could influence the ability of the research team to meet critical deadlines, as well as compromise the results of research project, and therefore impact the credibility of the Principal Investigator. Poor decisions may be damaging to the reputation of the Principal Investigator, the School, and the University and could lead to incorrect or inappropriate policy recommendations being made.
