About This Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to focus their efforts on developing their expertise and emerging research profile in their discipline. At this level it is expected that the incumbent will contribute to service and engagement roles and activities.

Key responsibilities include:

1. Research

Design, develop, and implement information extraction methods from structured and unstructured data contained in iEMRs.

Investigate, evaluate, and improve the developed techniques for information extraction. This will include quantitative and qualitative evaluation, based on datasets and user studies with key stakeholders.

Assist in the development of a robust data model that thoroughly describes the data contained in the iEMR.

Produce quality research outputs consistent with discipline norms by publishing or exhibiting in high quality outlets.

Participate in applications for competitive research funding to support projects and activities.

Work with colleagues in the development of joint research projects and applications for competitive research funding support.

Contribute to progressing towards transfer of knowledge, technology and practices to research end users through translation, including commercialisation of UQ intellectual property.

Develop a coherent research program and an emerging research profile.

Review and draw upon best practice research methodologies.

2. Supervision and Researcher Development

Contribute to the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students (as appropriate).

Demonstrate personal effectiveness in supervision and the management of researcher development.

As appropriate, manage research support staff effectively throughout the employee lifecycle in accordance with University policy and procedures.

Work to promptly resolve conflict and grievances when they arise in accordance with University policy and procedures.

3. Citizenship and Service

Further develop external links and partnerships by cultivating relationships with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community

Demonstrate citizenship behaviours that align to the UQ values.

Show leadership of self through collaboration and active participation in priority activities for the unit

Provide support to other academic positions and unit operations as needed during other team members absences.

Contribute to internal service roles and administrative processes as required, including participation in decision-making and service on relevant committees.

Collaborate in service activities external to the immediate organisation unit.

Any other duties as reasonably directed by your supervisor.

4. Other

Ensure you are aware of and comply with legislation and University policy relevant to the duties undertaken, including but not exclusive to:

The University's Code of Conduct.

Requirements of the Queensland occupational health and safety (OH&S) legislation and related OH&S responsibilities and procedures developed by the University or Institute/School.

The adoption of sustainable practices in all work activities and compliance with associated legislation and related University sustainability responsibilities and procedures.

Requirements of the Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000, the National Code 2007 and associated legislation, and related responsibilities and procedures developed by the University.

About You

Completion or near completion of a PhD in the in the field of Information Retrieval, Natural Language Processing, or Machine Learning on Textual Data

Demonstrated expert knowledge and experience in relevant empirical research methods, including information extraction, semantic search. Research experience with medical records data or other relevant domain- specific search will be beneficial and highly regarded.

Demonstrated publication record in quality research outlets in relevant fields; examples include ACM SIGIR, ACM WSDM, The Web Conf, ACL, NAACL- HLT, EMNLP, AAAI, ACM TOIS, ACM TIST, TACL, AMIA, JAMIA, BMJ, JDOC, JASIST.

Advanced computer skills of implementing machine learning algorithms, data extraction pipelines, wrangling large-scale datasets, and showcasing the research results.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

The ability to work both independently in a research environment and as part of a cross-disciplinary research team.

High level organizational skills, with demonstrated capacity to establish and achieve goals.

Ability to build smooth liaisons and professional contact with academic and industrial collaborators.

Experience in supervising research students (e.g., PhD, Mphil, Honors).

What We Can Offer

This is a Full-time , 100 % FTE Fixed-term position through to 30 June 2023 at Academic Level A.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $87,006.34 - $96,530.67 plus super of up to 17 %. The total FTE package will be in the range $101,797.42- $112,940.88 per annum.

The following flexible employment options may be available for this role

Part time/job share; some working from home; variable start or finish times; compressed hours; purchased leave; flex-time.
